about

The Passion of Joan of Arc is a 1928 silent film considered to one of the best silent films ever made. While music was written for the film (intended to be played live), director Carl Th. Dreyer disapproved of most of it. It appears he never felt any definitive soundtrack had been written for the film in his lifetime. Since Dreyer's death and the rediscovery of the original version of the film in 1981, many musicians have created their own scores for the film.

This score was improvised by 11 musicians playing a myriad of electronic instruments in the Black Box Theater at SUNY Potsdam in Potsdam, New York on May 15th, 2018.

It is best experienced with the Criterion Collection's French version of the Passion, starting when the words "Then, in 1981..." appear on screen in the opening text crawl.
